The Elementary School Discipline Philosophy
The OES discipline philosophy is centered on creating and maintaining a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment that fosters positive behavior, social-emotional development, and academic achievement. At OES we guide this philosophy by the principles of respect, responsibility, empathy and accountability- with a focus on proactive and supportive approaches to behavior management.
Positive Behavioral Support (PBIS process)- we believe in emphasizing a proactive and preventative approach to discipline by recognizing and reinforcing positive behaviors. This may involved the use of started such as positive reinforcement, praise, and reward to encourage desired behaviors and create a positive school culture.
Social-Emotional Learning- we believe in integrating social-emotional learning into the school’s curriculum through REACH classes to help students develop self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and responsible decision making. This approach aims to cultivate a supportive and empathetic school community where students can thrive emotionally and academically.
Clear Expectations and Consistency- we believe in establishing clear behavioral expectations and rules for students, with consistent enforcement and fair application of consequences. Clear communication of expectations helps create a structured and predictable environment, supporting students in understanding the boundaries and making positive choices.
Individualized Support- we know and recognize that each student is unique and the discipline philosophy may need to incorporate individualized support and interventions tailored to meet students’ specific behavioral and emotional needs. This could involve personalized behavior plans, school counselor check-ins, or collaboration with families to address underlying issues.
We believe that integrating these elements into our discipline philosophy will cultivate an environment where students feel valued, safe, and supported in their social, emotional, and academic growth- ultimately contributing to their overall well-being and success.
